What's your position on prostitutes? Harmless recreational outlet or pernicious social evil? It's in the movies all the time and we don't bat an eyelid about that.
Just reading something today about women in the UK who visit male prostitutes - seems like a boom industry.
So who's paid for sex? I reckon everyone must have some kind of story to tell...

i'd pay if the prices weren't so steep.
while there's a market for it, it'll always exist.
On the other side of the coin, if i was whoring myself out i think i'd charge a fair old whack.

To me, it's kind of like the adult film industry; yesterday I read an amazing essay about the porn industry by David Foster Wallace called Big Red Son. I had no idea so many porn stars commit suicide.
So I don't think prostitution is totally harmless (I think it probably has psychological repercussions for the prostitute if not the john), but I think it should be legalized. I also think drugs should be legalized.
I've never paid or been paid for sex. I'm just curious as to how old those women are. Most of the women I know who are my age (old - 50 plus) complain that their husbands still want sex regularly.

Some women crave having sex into their 70's and 80's. I don't know what the percentages are... I know that my own mother liked having sex with my father right up to her 70th birthday...she told me so...really was more than I wanted to know...

The prices surely include a large guilt tax. If they legalised it, presumably market forces would bring the price right down...

I'm still trying to figure out Ganymed's post, but there's no stories from anyone. Seems I'm the only one...
I subscribe to the idea that you have to try it if only for the experience, which I did the first time I came to Bangkok as a tourist about 15 years ago. Not much to relate. I remember totting up that the whole night cost me about 50 quid - including entry to a show where I picked the girl up, the drinks along the way, the 'bar fine' for taking the her off the premises, the nearby hotel room for two hours, her own fee, plus packet of Marlboro she cadged off me. I thought it was good value. Of course she was unbelievably pretty - so beautiful I was inspired to recite a damn Shakespeare sonnet to her on the bed. She didn't have a clue what I was talking about and laid there patiently waiting for me to shut the fuck up and get on with it. She mainly seemed interested in watching television, but all in all it was a pleasant experience.
The only other times were some years later when I was on a solitary trip to eastern Java. I think I did it to spite my wife who had been giving me a hard time (...Eyes Wide Shut...?). The girl was shy and eye-poppingly well-endowed, that was something new to me. I almost hate to say it but it was one of the best shags I've had in my life and I still remember it fondly.
The next night I had another go but the girl this time was a too much on the large size for my taste - she just lay there and it was like shagging a mattress. That was my last exploit. I've lived in Bangkok for the past six years without feeling the need to have another go.
I say legalise it. I hear they've already done so in Holland and New Zealand. It's a business transaction between two adults; society needs to lighten up about it. The women need the protection of the law, not to be criminalised by it.

Actually I had a post that I decided revealed too much of myself and deleted it. But you have to leave something behind to do that and the arrow was chosen at random.
It is infuriating to live in a country dominated by Puritanical views. Worse than the attitudes on prostitution, is the latest thing the kids do of sending nude images to each other with their cell phones or whatever they are and the cops are saying this is child porno as they are underage which of course it isn't. I don't thing anyone has been charged yet but the teachers/cops are in a tizzy over it.

There's a line from one of Ian Fleming's novels that probably sums up the bulk of the business. I can't remember the exact line, but it's something like 'Once a man passes 40, sex either costs him money or a good story. The story costs him more.'
When I was younger and trying to break into standup comedy, I took a few gigs as MC at strip clubs: at the time that was the accepted training ground - no-one cared if you were funny, you were just there to get them to go to the bar while the next act got changed, so if the audience laughed you knew you had something. Certainly a lot of the men in the audience were of that age where they had to work harder to pull, and prostitution took all the really heavy lifting out of it (and wasn't that much more expensive than a date and came with guarantees). Some of the girls did go home with customers, some didn't, but most of them were housewives trying to earn pin money to stretch the housekeeping. Often they'd leave their shopping and groceries on the corner of the stage where they could keep an eye on them during their turn in case another girl stole them. It was all very mechanical and unappealing rather than distasteful or offensive - you got the impression it was no different from being on a production line plucking chickens all day.
Walking home late at night, you'd inevitably pass the prostitutes trying to pick up the passing trade, and they were generally the ones who wouldn't pass even the lowest standards at the cheapest strip club, so it was all rather academic: I never had any interest because I never once saw a single woman on the game who was attractive to me on any level. Added to that was the fact that I've never wanted to just have sex with a woman who I have no connection with - it just seems like it would take away everything that's really enjoyable about the act for me. Add to that the servility of it: the fact that someone is responding the way they're paid to rather than surprising you by reacting (positively or negatively) spontaneously. Sex with prostitutes just seems to me an essentially solitary act. I don't disapprove of it, it just holds no appeal for me.

I thought it might indicate some hidden text. Pity.

America does seem to be particularly uptight. You can see how in all those films about prostitutes (Klute, etc) they're trying to get their head around it.
Those cellphone pictures sound like a tricky issue though... not that the kids are doing it, but where the pictures might end up...

I've no doubt at all that's how it is in Britain - I'd rather shag my sister than a skanky British prostitute. It's a different kettle of fish over here though as you might imagine. The girls are always gorgeous, mainly genuinely friendly and eager to please. A lot of men must weep at the beauty of the experience.
