Ouch!. But I wouldn't know. I came from the hashbrown side of Texas (the west). About halfway between San Antonio and Houston, travelling east , you started getting grits with your ham and eggs instead of hashbrowns.

But back to HL, seems she was a private person but here is what one writer said of her:
As a child, Harper Lee was "a rough 'n' tough tomboy.... She had short, cropped hair, wore coveralls, went barefoot, and could talk mean like a boy," according to Marianne M. Moates in A Bridge of Childhood: Truman Capote's Southern Years.

Well, you may proceed to dog my cats.
I assume Ms Moates knew what she was talking about and wasn't romanticising a bit? To my notion, a senator's daughter going about barefoot in public would cause a bit of a scandal - knowing the social sensibilities of that time and place. Perhaps she just meant going out barefoot in the yard - well, we all do that. I'm trying to recall if the little girl in "Member of the Wedding" went around barefoot in public - I doubt it, but even if she did, she wasn't a senator's daughter...

sez fed,
but even if she did, she wasn't a senator's daughter...

Papa was a state senator, hardly the august personage of a US Senator. I expect she went barefoot until the senior prom.
